Work-related injuries can happen for a number of reasons. In some situations, a chemical can spill and cause serious damage. Other times, equipment can fall or crush and employee. Just recently an incident at a car wash resulted in one fatality and three other injuries.
The state's Occupational Safety and Health division is currently investigating the accident, likely to determine if the car wash had any workplace safety violations. Some workplace injuries are caused by a lack of preventative measures that an employer is required to take. In this case, it is still uncertain.
The accident occurred a week ago. One of the car wash employees had been driving a car from one point in the car wash to another when it suddenly sped up. Unfortunately, the unexpected acceleration caused the vehicle to hit two other employees; the vehicle also hit another car which then struck another employee.
The two employees who were first hit were crushed underneath the vehicle and freed ten minutes later by responders. The injured workers were brought to the hospital where one man died. The other worker sustained a fractured pelvis and the third injured employee had several broken ribs. No charges have been made against the employee who was driving the vehicle.
Though the accident is still under investigation, the employees who were injured will be faced with considerations like medical bills and lost wages. The family of the employee who was killed is also facing those things, in addition to funeral costs. In both cases, workers' compensation and benefits could help alleviate some of the stress related to finances.
