Chemical used in furniture manufacturing named in OSHA hazard alert

At a construction site, it is easy to spot some of the hazards that could cause injury to a worker. But in some work environments, the hazards aren't as obvious. OSHA recently issued a hazard alert, with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), warning of the risks that come with the use of a chemical named "1-bromopropane".

Employers are being urged to take caution when using any type of solvent with 1-bromopropane included in the ingredients. Workers who are in professions such as furniture manufacturing or dry cleaning could be exposed to this chemical more often than they are aware.

Overexposure is a real concern, and can cause nervous system damage over time. Some suggestions that OSHA and NIOSH had to prevent overexposure included:

  • Substitute 1-bromopropane with a less toxic chemical
  • Reduce the amount of time workers are in contact with the chemical
  • Make sure ventilation systems are in place

This can help reduce the risk that a worker has of being overexposed to the hazardous chemical.
