Simple tips Colorado residents can use to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome

When you think about worker's compensation, what comes to mind? For many people, the answer is: construction accidents, worksite accidents and the like.

What lots of people in Colorado do not realize is that office workers get injured on the job, too. One of the most frequently reported work injuries among office workers is carpal tunnel syndrome, a painful compression of the lining of the nerves in the wrist and fingers. It often drives workers to seek worker's compensation benefits.

Now, every person is unique, so it follows that every medical situation is unique. But there are a few general tips that medical experts recommend for avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome. They include:

  • Taking breaks when typing, sewing or performing any other motion that requires manual dexterity. Repetitive motion without any rest is a frequent cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • If you sense pain in your arm, wrist or fingers, consider using a brace or orthopedic rest pad. Your employer might have these available to you.
  • Maintain proper posture while at your desk or work station. This means sitting upright with your fingers and hands lightly and easily positioned over your keyboard. Your employer's human resources department may have guides or an instructional video you can follow.

Those are three very general tips you can use to protect yourself. But even if you are very careful, you could still develop carpal tunnel syndrome. If that happens, do not assume that you are without recourse. You'd be far from the first person to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, and you might have more options than you realize.
