Oil rig explosion kills one, burns four, one remains missing

It's a fact of life that many people earn their livelihoods by working in dangerous industries such as on oil rigs. Generally speaking, the pay these workers earn takes into account the dangerous nature of their employment and the possibility of a workplace accident.

However, all workers, even those working under dangerous conditions should feel confident that all safety precautions are taken, and that their health and wellbeing are not placed in jeopardy because of an employer's violation of safety regulations.

Was this the case for the owner of an oil platform that exploded and caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico last week? Perhaps, but at this point in the investigation one can only speculate about what caused the deadly explosion which killed at least one worker and resulted in burn injuries for four other employees.

Two of those burn victims remain in critical condition. One of the burned men is in serious condition, and one has been upgraded to fair condition.

After the explosion, two men remained missing. The body of one was found this past weekend. A search sponsored by the owner of the oil rig is still underway for the second man. The Coast Guard has suspended its own search after covering 1,400 square miles near the oil platform without success.

Obviously this story took place far from Colorado, but we thought it was an important story for injured workers and their families everywhere to remember that employees who work in dangerous industries may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits for workplace accidents and injuries.
