Two killed in Highlands Ranch construction wreck

Two construction workers were killed during a tragic accident along Colorado State Highway 470 late last month. The accident happened when an elderly driver drove off the side of the road, striking the two men who had been working on a road expansion project. In the aftermath of the accident, it is unlikely that the families of the men who died in the work-related accident are thinking about money, but they may want to consult a workers' compensation attorney to apply for death and dependency benefits.

The crash happened on Nov. 20, as the two men, ages 27 and 47, were working along the roadside in Highlands Ranch. A 74-year-old driver careened off the side of the road, plowing his Subaru into the two; both were declared dead at the scene.

Sources report that the driver's brakes had failed, which may explain why his vehicle left the road, but even if this is true, it does not prevent the two construction workers' families from receiving some kind of workers' compensation benefits. Workers' compensation laws do not require that an individual be the victim of an intentional fatal event. Nor does it matter that their employer may have tried to protect its employers from harm.

It may seem insensitive to think about money following the death of a loved one, but when a family member dies during an on-the-job accident, the surviving relatives lose that source of income. Applying for death and dependency benefits, however, will help to cover some of the income the family member would have continued earning.
