Studies show retail workers more likely to be injured

Studies have shown that workers in the retail and wholesale industries face a high risk of injury. Workplace injuries can be cause by a variety of factors, and in the wholesale and retail industries where workers are moving heavy items and are on their feet for many hours the risk of a stress injury or a slip or trip increases.

In particular, workers who are employed somewhere that handles meat, such as a grocery store, have a 75 percent greater risk of injury than the average for all other industries combined. Overall, workers face an accident rate of about 16 per 10,0000 employees, but in workplaces where meat is handled there are about 28 injuries per 10,000 employees.

Experts at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health say that employers can help reduce the risk of an accident through simple steps like making sure there are enough outlets so that employees do not have to use too many extension cords which can become tangled and create a tripping hazard.

Workers who are injured on the job are entitled to workers compensation, regardless of whether the injury was caused by negligence on the part of their employer. If there was negligence on the part a third party, then that individual or company could be additionally liable for the injury and for any pain, suffering, or other noneconomic harm related to the accident.

It is very important for Colorado workers to know their rights when they have been involved in a workplace accident.
