Inmate attacks prison employees, sends them to hospital

There are certain jobs that come with risk, but even in the most dangerous of careers, Denver employees should be confident that they will not be injured on the job. It is their employers' responsibility to provide proper training, safety equipment and to take other measures to protect their workers from injury. Unfortunately, sometimes employers fail to meet those responsibilities or something happens outside of both the employer and employee's control, resulting in serious injury.

Working as a corrections officer is just one of those jobs that come with considerable risk. What is important to remember, however, is that anyone who is injured while working in a jail or prison is entitled to works compensation benefits in Colorado. It does not matter whether the incident that led to a workplace injury was the fault of the prison, the corrections officer or an inmate, an injured worker can receive compensation for medical bills and lost wages.

Two employees in an out-of-state prison were the recent victims of an inmate attack late last month. One of the employees was a corrections officer and the other worked with the food service company in the prison. An inmate approached the two and then started beating them in the dining hall.

Fortunately for the workers, other corrections officers were able to subdue the inmate and get the employees some help. The two workers were injured, however, and were rushed to the hospital for care. It remains to be seen how much time it will take for them to recover enough to return to work.
