Hospital construction leads to burns, hospitalization

If it may seem like construction work is inherently dangerous it is only because employers don't always take the time to properly train and protect their employees. Whether it is to cut costs or because they just never considered certain work hazards, construction companies have a history of construction accidents, which can lead to workers' compensation.

Workers' compensation is designed to help anyone in Colorado who becomes injured or sick on the job. When a medical condition that developed on the job prevents someone from working, it is fairly clear that the employer and its insurer should be the ones responsible for paying medical bills and lost wages. The benefits also encourage employees to seek medical attention when they need it instead of trying to solider through an otherwise dangerous or painful injury.

It is likely that seven construction workers may be able to apply for workers' compensation benefits, if they need them, following a fire at a hospital. The construction workers were working on a new building of the hospital when a fire started in an elevator shaft. Fortunately, most of the workers were not too injured, but one was taken to the hospital following the fire. Many of the other construction workers suffered smoke inhalation.

It is currently unknown what caused the fire or what the construction workers' fire training consisted of. Firefighters did ultimately respond to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The state occupational safety and health department has been contacted and it will likely look into the matter.
