Athletes, injuries and... workers' compensation?

It's officially football season. Fans everywhere are donning jerseys and cheering on their favorite teams. Collective groans are heard when a favored player is injured and has to leave the field. From our end of the television, we move on to continue watching the game. But for the injured player, the next few months and even years can involve rehabilitation, medical expenses, and the fear of being unable to play again.

Eley_9252013_2.jpgWhile many high-profile, professional athletes can handle medical expenses that accompany an injury, not all athletes are in the same position after being hurt on the field. But are athletes able to access workers' compensation benefits the same way that any other individual who was injured on-the-job?

Each state has different workers' compensation laws that dictate what types of claims can be submitted. For those whose livelihoods rest on their athletic abilities, a serious injury can be devastating without proper medical attention. It is important to understand what types of benefits are available depending on the situation.
