Bearing the weight of the world: shoulder injuries and work comp

In Greek myth, the Titan Atlas took the world on his shoulders.

As the story goes, he once got a brief reprieve when Hercules came by. But the image of Atlas as the one holding up the world endures into our time. This can be seen, for example, in the title of the famous Ayn Rand novel, “Atlas Shrugged.”

The thing is, you don’t have to be Atlas holding up the world to experience shoulder injuries. In this post, we will discuss some of the considerations involved in workers’ compensation cases involving such injuries.

Chronic back pain is probably much better known as a common problem than shoulder pain. It has been widely reported how many doctors tend to push patients experiencing back pain to use narcotic painkillers.

Shoulder injuries have a somewhat lower profile. But the reality is that the shoulder is an exceedingly complex part of the body. With all the nerves and tissues involved, there are all sorts of issues and injuries that can arise there.

When those injuries are related to work, it is only natural to consider your eligibility for workers’ compensation.

Obviously a lot depends on the severity of your injury. Sometimes a shoulder injury will be only resulting in a relatively short time away from work. In other cases, the injury may be much more serious – and perhaps even permanent.

For you, however, the rule of thumb for shoulder injuries should be simple. If it’s bad enough for you to miss work, it makes sense to get it checked out by a doctor and pursue an appropriate personal injury claim.
