Injury risks in warehouse work, part 1: multiple hazards

Some workplaces are of course more dangerous than others.

Construction sites, for example, are well known to among the more dangerous settings in which to work. We discussed that issue most recently in our April 15 post.

In this two-part post, let's look at another common work setting in which workers are exposed to many risks. We will discuss warehouse work with a specific focus on forklift injuries.

To be sure, warehouse work carries many other risks of work injuries besides forklift accidents. These risks can include:
• Falling objects, especially from boxes and palettes stacked up high
• Delivery trucks, particularly in the loading dock area
• Repetitive strain injuries from lifting and other movements

This is not an exclusive list of potential warehouse hazards. But all of the risks listed above are common ones. For more information about workers' comp claims involving injuries from these hazards, please visit our page on warehouse workers.

Forklift accidents are common as well. After all, many warehouses are literally and figuratively powered by forklifts zipping up and down, all over the floor.

Indeed, the word "powered" is right there in the technical name used by federal safety regulators for forklifts. The term used by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for them is "powered industrial trucks."

In part two of this post, we will discuss some of the specific hazards associated with forklifts.
