Colorado: Still room to improve workplace safety

There are many great things that can be said about living in Colorado. It's a naturally beautiful state and it's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Certainly, many people enjoy a relatively high quality of life in this state.

Not long ago, WalletHub released a list of the safest states. Using a broad range of criteria, including everything from financial safety to community safety to workplace safety, the organization put together rankings. Interestingly enough, Colorado ended up right in the middle, at number 25.

Looking closer, Colorado did better on workplace safety than on its overall score, receiving a rank of 13 in this respect.

Keeping this in mind, it might be helpful to look at the criteria used to confer this ranking. The ranking provided to Colorado for workplace safety was based on four different metrics and each was weighted. Based on the state's fatal workplace accident rate, overall workplace injury and illness rate, days away from work due to injury and workplace injury coverage rates, Colorado made it well into the top half of states.

Of course, it is reassuring that Colorado's workplaces are not near the bottom in terms of safety, but there is still considerable improvement that could be made. Life at work can play a very large role in overall of life satisfaction. Feeling safe and secure at workplace is a very basic expectation in any job role.

Moving forward, the hope is that employers and public officials will take steps to make Colorado one of the safest places to live in the country. Whether a person works in a high-rise office building or a manufacturing center, they deserve to feel safe on the job and at home.
