Trump Administration Could Result in Increased Workplace Dangers

Workplace safety in Colorado and throughout the country is an ongoing concern for every employer. In terms of federal oversight, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has long been the primary agency responsible for keeping American workplaces safe.

However, with the well-documented budget cuts coming under President Trump's administration, OSHA's ability to keep workplaces safe could be significantly diminished.

Budget Cuts

It's no secret that President Trump intends to reduce spending in many areas. According to a recent article by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Trump plans to cut $2.5 billion from the Department of Labor. Obviously, these cuts will result in a reduced ability for OSHA to finance its initiatives.

One of the most important initiatives being cut is a grant program to provide training for nonprofits on identifying and minimizing safety risks in the workplace. Lack of effectiveness and oversight are among the reasons for cutting the budget on this grant program.

What Will This Mean for Workplace Safety?

Initially, these budget cuts would seem to result in more dangerous workplaces. However, the grants were for nonprofit organization, so there will be little impact in traditional workplaces. Further, if the lack of oversight and effectiveness cited in support of the budget cuts are true, the grant program wasn't really working anyway.

There is significant probability that other cuts will reduce OSHA oversight in many workplaces.

Protecting Your Rights if You Have Been Injured

As always, when the legislature fails to make workplaces safer, and injuries result, it comes down to attorneys protecting the individual. If you have been injured in a workplace accident, talk with an experienced attorney who can protect your rights and help make sure you obtain the compensation you need.
