Social Security Disability Income Vs. Workers’ Comp
The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides benefits to individuals who are unable to work due to a disability. They offer two types of benefits: Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These are government programs and you may be entitled to benefits if a disability, condition or illness keeps you from working.
Workers’ compensation benefits, on the other hand, are provided by your employer’s workers’ compensation insurer. If you were injured in a work-related accident, you are entitled to benefits, regardless of fault.
The Overlap Of Workers’ Comp And SSD
If you became disabled or suffered a serious injury at work and now are unable to return to your job, you may be entitled to both workers’ comp and SSD benefits. If you receive workers’ compensation benefits, however, those benefits may be reduced by half of the SSD you are receiving.
According to the SSA, the total benefits you receive cannot exceed 80 percent of your average earnings prior to your accident. If you exceed this amount, your benefits may be reduced. This reduction will stop when you reach 65 years of age or when your workers’ compensation benefits end.
